Is he a human being or an animal? Techo Hun Sen Urges Cambodians to Reflect on Sam Rainsy’s Statements Amid Border Conflict
Phnom Penh, August 11, 2025 — The President of the Cambodian Senate, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, issued a strong public appeal today, calling on the Cambodian people to critically evaluate the remarks made by opposition leader Sam Rainsy concerning the ongoing border conflict with Thailand. Specifically, Hun Sen questioned Rainsy’s stance, asking whether his actions and words reflect patriotism or betrayal.
This statement followed Rainsy’s recent comments praising the Thai military, which has been involved in violent clashes along the border in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces. The clashes, occurring from July 24 to 28, have resulted in significant casualties and displacement, with Cambodian soldiers and civilians suffering injuries and fatalities, and nearly 200,000 people displaced from their homes.
In a recent video post, Techo Hun Sen condemned Rainsy’s remarks, which included praise for the invading Thai forces and disparagement of the Cambodian military’s efforts to defend the nation. Regarding Rainsy’s comments, Techo Hun Sen stated: “Is he (Sam Rainsy) a human being or an animal? Is he a patriot or a traitor? Please listen and think for yourself.”
Techo Hun Sen’s statement highlighted the gravity of the situation, recalling that during the five-day conflict, the Thai army violated international law by using heavy weaponry—including cluster bombs, chemical weapons, warplanes, and heavy bombs—against Cambodian territory and civilian infrastructure, including the historic Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
He emphasized the suffering and damage inflicted on Cambodia, citing the destruction of schools, temples, homes, and landmarks, as well as the trauma experienced by Cambodian soldiers and civilians. He criticized Rainsy’s supportive stance, questioning whether such behavior aligns with patriotism or constitutes treason.
The Senate President’s appeal underscores the importance of national unity and the need for responsible discourse amid ongoing tensions. He urged Cambodian citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made to defend the country’s sovereignty and to consider the implications of supporting actions that undermine national integrity.
Furthermore, Techo Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia’s firm stance on sovereignty and international law, condemning Thailand’s aggressive acts and calling for peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels. The government continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to safeguarding Cambodia’s territorial integrity and the well-being of its citizens.
